about the artist--
James Colwell
James Colwell has been a practicing artist for 40 years, working in a variety of media including oil, acrylic, graphic arts and woodworking. His public commissions have ranged from outdoor sculpture to billboards, notably Takoma Park's signature mural, "Guardians of the Neighborhood" at B.Y. Morrison Park. James has won many awards and grants for his art and has exhibited his work in a variety of places including the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA, James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, and the Strathmore Arts Center in Rockville, MD.
A thirty year resident of Takoma Park, MD, he and his wife, Alison Baker, have spent the past decade restoring a 115-year-old home in the heart of the historic district, returning it to its original charm while adding contemporary character. In addition to his painting commissions, James restores fine pianos and blends his skills of painting and restoration to create unique, custom art pianos.
